Oak Furniture Care

Care of your hand-waxed oak furniture:-

Taking good care of your furniture will prolong its life and enhance its beauty.

Wood Characteristics and Colour.

This chunky, rustic furniture is made from solid oak and veneers and has been hand finished with a silky wax. Like all wood, oak varies in grain pattern which may include knots, slight cracks, blemishes and colour variations. No two pieces are alike, this gives each piece of furniture its own unique character.

Your furniture may become a little darker and richer in colour with time, this is due to the action of light on the wood and is called ‘mellowing’. Lamps and ornaments should be moved regularly when your furniture is new so the mellowing process is even on the whole piece.

FOR ADDED PROTECTION DURING TRANSIT, YOUR FURNITURE HAS BEEN GIVEN AN EXTRA COATING OF WAX. PLEASE ENSURE THAT THIS IS REMOVED ONCE YOUR FURNITURE IS IN PLACE. TO REMOVE THE EXCESS WAX GENTLY WIPE THE SURFACE OF YOUR FURNITURE WITH A DRY, LINT FREE CLOTH. THIS WILL AVOID ANY WAX TRANSFER TO CLOTHING/BEDDING.

Surface care and cleaning:-

  • Avoid locating your furniture in extremes of temperature or humidity as these may adversely affect the wood and the construction of your furniture.
  • To clean your furniture use a soft dry lint free cloth /duster or a slightly damp cloth, do not use chemical or abrasive cleaners on our furniture.
  • Do not place hot objects directly on your furniture always use heat protective coverings or mats.
  • Any liquid or food spillages should be cleaned immediately with a dry cloth and with a blotting action.
  • If the furniture becomes scratched or marked rub some solid wax into the damaged area to exclude moisture.
  • If the wood starts to look dry it can be refreshed by re waxing with a light coat of soft wax polish. Always make sure the surface is dry and dust free before applying the wax. Avoid buffing the surface too much after applying a coat of wax as this will result in a “shiny” surface.

CARE OF YOUR LAQUERED FURNITURE:-.

  • Lacquered wood should be wiped down with a damp cloth but buffed up with a dry cloth immediately afterwards.
  • Polish occasionally using a soft clean duster.
  • Tables should be protected by using mats and any plants pots or vases sat on any of the furniture should have a mat underneath and moved every so often so any fading or darkening of the wood will be even.
  • Spills will bead on a lacquered surface and should be wiped up immediately.
  • Avoid locating your furniture in extremes of temperature or humidity as these may adversely affect the wood and the construction of your furniture.

CARE OF YOUR OILED FURNITURE:-

  • Your oiled furniture should not be sprayed with any polish or wax.
  • Remove any spillages/dust with a barely damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or detergents.
  • Being a natural product it will require very occasional re application of clear Danish oil (use very sparingly). Apply with a lint free cloth going along the grain.
  • Any marks can be lightly sanded with medium/coarse sandpaper going with the grain. Remove the fine dust that the sandpapering has created and re apply the clear Danish oil and leave to soak in.
  • Any uneven shading will disappear when dried out.
  • This method should only be used on solid wood.

General tips:-

Central heating, under floor heating, and conservatories dry wood products out, as these natural products breathe. It is advisable therefore to keep the room humidified and keep a vase or bowl of water under or on top of your furniture. Cover the table in direct sunlight especially in a conservatory.

Traveller feet are designed for transportation only. They are normally removed when placed in situe. If left on the plastic coating will wear off in time and the screw or nail will damage any flooring. We therefore recommend that the traveller feet are removed and replaced with felt pads.

Handles:- These generally have a protective coating to prevent tarnishing so metal polish or an abrasive cleaner should not be used.
